This Day in Top 40 History: February 1

On February 1, 1994, Harry Styles was born in Worcestershire, England. He later joined One Direction, one of the most successful pop boy bands. They had at least six Top 10 hits in the U.S. before going on an indefinite hiatus in 2016. As a solo artist, Styles scored two No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100. He shares his birthday with Lisa Marie Presley, Elvis’s only child.

February 1 has seen some significant music events. In 1972, Neil Young released his fourth album, *Harvest*, which became his only No. 1 album in the U.S. It included two Top 40 singles. In 1980, Blondie released “Call Me,” the theme song for the film *American Gigolo*, which topped charts in both the U.K. and the U.S. In 1983, Journey’s album *Frontiers* came out, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and producing a Top 10 hit. More recently, in 2024, Don Toliver released “Leave the Club,” which peaked at No. 38 on the Billboard Hot 100.

February 1 has also been a day for exciting personal news. In 1986, Diana Ross married Arne Naess in Geneva, with Stevie Wonder performing at the ceremony. The couple had two sons but divorced in 2000. In 2017, Beyoncé announced on Instagram that she was expecting twins, gaining over a million likes in just 30 minutes.

Notable performances have also taken place on this day. In 1963, a 17-year-old Neil Young played his first gig with the Squires in Winnipeg. In 2015, Katy Perry and Lenny Kravitz delivered an unforgettable halftime show at Super Bowl XLIX.
