This Day in Top 40 History: July 13

July 13 has been a big date for Top 40 and Adult Contemporary music. In 1959 Paul Anka’s hit shot to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed there for four weeks, cementing his teen idol status. On July 13, 1983 Lionel Richie’s dance‑infused pop hit began a two‑week run at No. 1, showing how pop could cross over to AC audiences. Toni Braxton’s debut album dropped on July 13, 1993; it reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and sold over 10 million copies, spawning six Top 40 singles. In 2004 Jimmy Buffett released License to Chill, which topped the Billboard 200 and the Top Country Albums chart and featured big guest artists. Lily Allen’s debut, Alright, Still, arrived in 2006 and became a U.K. hit for its blend of pop, reggae, ska, and grime. More recently, in 2024 Hozier landed on Billboard’s Hot AC chart, reflecting the format’s interest in genre‑blending, soulful artists. July 13 also marks major cultural moments: Live Aid was broadcast from Wembley and JFK Stadium in 1985, bringing together Queen, U2, Madonna and more to raise over $100 million for famine relief. Queen’s Live Aid set, led by Freddie Mercury, remains one of the most talked‑about performances in rock history. Even today, viral hits reshape mid‑July radio playlists, showing how social media now helps drive both Top 40 and AC airplay.
