This Day in Top 40 History: March 3  

March 3 has seen some memorable moments in music history. On this day, artists like Roberta Flack and Harry Nilsson took home GRAMMY Awards. Madonna also released a soulful album, while the benefit Concert for Bangladesh won Album of the Year at the 15th Annual GRAMMY Awards.

In 1973, at the GRAMMYs in Nashville, Helen Reddy won Best Female Pop Performance for her hit song. She famously thanked God in her acceptance speech. That same year, Harry Nilsson won Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male, and Roberta Flack snagged Record of the Year.

Fast forward to 1997, U2 released their ninth studio album, Pop, which topped charts in over 30 countries. Tracks like “Discotheque” and “Staring at the Sun” made it into the Top 40 on Billboard’s Hot 100.

In 2000, Tom Jones won Best British Male Artist at the BRIT Awards, beating out legends like David Bowie. Five years later, 50 Cent dropped his album The Massacre, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and produced several Top 10 hits.

In 2014, American Authors released their debut album, Oh, What a Life. It peaked at No. 15 on the Billboard 200 and reached No. 3 on the Top Rock Albums chart, thanks to the hit “Best Day of My Life.”

March 3 has also marked significant cultural events. In 1973, George Harrison and Friends won Album of the Year for Concert for Bangladesh, paving the way for future benefit concerts. In 1978, Van Halen kicked off their first world tour in Chicago, and in 1979, the Bee Gees’ album Spirits Having Flown hit No. 1 in the U.S. charts.
