This Day in Top 40 History: March 9

On March 9, 1970, James Brown made a big change by firing most of his band after they complained about low pay. He replaced them with the Pacemakers, a Cincinnati group featuring brothers Bootsy and Catfish Collins. This decision helped his career, leading to several hits, including one that made it into the Top 20 in the U.S.

Notable album releases on March 9 include:

– 1992: Ride released their second album, *Going Blank Again*, which was a hit and included a Top 10 song in the U.K.
– 2018: Lil Yachty dropped *Lil Boat 2*, featuring Offset, Quavo, and 2 Chainz. The album hit No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and included popular tracks that made the Top 40 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

March 9 is also a day for celebrating birthdays and weddings:

– 1987: Bow Wow was born in Columbus, Ohio. He started writing songs and performing at just 10 years old. He has since released four Top 10 albums on the Billboard 200.
– 1993: SUGA, known as Agust D, was born in South Korea. He is a member of BTS, the first K-pop group to top the Hot 100 chart.
– 2012: Jerry Lee Lewis, at 76, married his caregiver Judith Brown in Mississippi. This was his seventh marriage, and he kept the wedding plans secret.

Sadly, March 9 has also seen losses in the music world:

– 1997: The Notorious B.I.G. was murdered in Los Angeles, just months after Tupac Shakur’s death. His murder remains unsolved.
– 2005: Chris LeDoux passed away at 56 from cancer. He released over 20 albums and collaborated with stars like Jon Bon Jovi and Garth Brooks.
