This Day in Top 40 History: November 30  

On November 30, 1974, Sir Elton John hit the top of the Billboard 200 with his Greatest Hits album. This was his first compilation album, and it spent 10 weeks at No. 1. It became the best-selling album of 1975 and was certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Let’s take a look at some other notable music moments from November 30:

In 1979, Pink Floyd released their 11th album, The Wall, which topped the charts for 15 weeks and is now considered one of the greatest rock albums of all time.

In 1985, Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin’s duet “Separate Lives” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was featured in the movie White Nights.

Fast forward to 2004, when Kelly Clarkson released her second album, Breakaway, featuring hits like “Since U Been Gone” and “Because of You.”

Music and culture often go hand in hand. On November 30, 1969, Neil Diamond made his only appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, performing “Sweet Caroline” and “Holly Holy.” In 2011, Skrillex received five GRAMMY nominations, including Best New Artist, making him the first DJ to be nominated for that award.

Notable performances include Bing Crosby’s Merrie Olde Christmas, which aired posthumously in 1977 and featured David Bowie. In 2012, Glen Campbell wrapped up his Goodbye Tour with a final show alongside his family.

November 30 also marks the birthdays of music legends Dick Clark and Billy Idol. In 1991, Billboard changed how it tracked record sales, using SoundScan data for the first time.
