On this day in 1988, U2 scored their first No. 1 hit in the U.K. with “Desire.” That same year, Def Leppard’s ballad “Love Bites” topped the Billboard Hot 100, making it their only single to reach that spot, while “Pour Some Sugar on Me” peaked at No. 2.

Cultural Milestones
October 8 has also seen significant cultural events. In 1948, Johnny Ramone, the legendary guitarist of the Ramones, was born. His unique style influenced countless musicians. In 1962, Solomon Linda, the writer of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” passed away at 53, leaving his family to fight for royalties.
