Tom Johnston Exits Doobie Brothers Tour, Needs Surgery

Tom Johnston is stepping away from the Doobie Brothers’ current tour, because the vocalist/guitarist needs surgery.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band issued a statement announcing the news. The statement notes Johnston’s surgery is to help treat “severe back pain.”

“Per advisement of his physician, Johnston should not be performing at this time and is looking forward to returning to the road as soon as possible,” says the statement. “The shows will go on – Pat Simmons, Michael McDonald, and John McFee will continue the tour beginning with their May 25th show at Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, FL.”

It is expected Johnston will return to the tour, but an exact timetable for his recovery was not disclosed.

Johnston issued his own personal statement. He said, “I hope for a speedy recovery and can’t wait to get back on the road and continue doing what I love.” Johnston added, “I would like to thank Pat, Michael, John and the entire Doobie Brothers band for covering for me while I recover from back surgery.”

The Doobie Brothers’ current tour leg in North America runs this summer and early fall. It’s currently set to wrap on October 28. A full list of tour dates can be found at TheDoobieBrothers.com.
