Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello has launched the Mary Morello Memorial Project to honor his mother, who died July 12 at 102.
Tom posted that the project will support organizations Mary cared about. Donations will go to causes she believed in and worked for. The family also asks people to “do as Mary did” by getting involved in caring, service and action. Between now and Oct. 1 — what would have been her 103rd birthday — Tom encourages fans to volunteer, protest, speak up, help those in need, make political art or music, and join picket lines.
Fans are asked to share what they do and tag @MaryMorelloMemorialProject so the community can keep working for peace, equality and justice.
On Oct. 3, two days after Mary’s birthday, Tom will host the Power to the People festival in Columbia, Maryland. The bill includes Foo Fighters, Dave Matthews, Bruce Springsteen, Serj Tankian, Joan Baez, Public Enemy and Taylor Momsen, among others.
