Tony Iommi surprised fans with an unexpected guitar solo at Sadler’s Wells Theatre during the Birmingham Royal Ballet’s performance of “Black Sabbath — The Ballet” on Wednesday. This marked Iommi’s first live performance since Black Sabbath’s final show in July.
Brian May captured the moment on video and shared it on Instagram, praising Iommi as “the true Father of Heavy Metal” and highlighting the collaboration with a 40-piece orchestra and 50 dancers. He called it the perfect addition to a fantastic production.
The ballet features a fresh mix of eight classic Black Sabbath songs along with new orchestral pieces. Guitarist Marc Hayward plays live while the Royal Ballet Sinfonia brings hits like “Paranoid,” “Iron Man,” and “War Pigs” to life. Christopher Austin leads the music direction.
The performance is divided into three acts, showcasing choreography by Pontus Lidberg, Raúl Reinoso, and Cassi Abranches. Between scenes, fans hear band chats and words from Sharon Osbourne, adding depth to the story.
This unique show is the brainchild of Carlos Acosta, who took over the Birmingham Royal Ballet in 2020. He wanted to blend the worlds of ballet and rock, aiming to reach new audiences. After a world tour in 2024 and a U.S. debut at the Virginia Arts Festival last May, this version of the ballet has received rave reviews and a standing ovation from fans.
The dancers displayed high energy and impressive choreography, attracting new fans. The show will move to the Edinburgh Festival Theatre from October 30 to November 1 for its first Scottish stop. Tickets are available now.
