Triple Grammy nominee Allison Russell has become the guest host of the daily women’s history podcast Womanica for February, Black History Month. In the new collaboration with the Wonder Media Network-produced broadcast, Russell will highlight innovative Black Women artists whose musical expressions have informed and influenced society and culture.

Wonder Media Network is a women-founded, mission-driven podcast network, and Russell will partner with them for the daily shows during Black History Month. She will acknowledge and highlight such artists as Etta James and Mary Lou Williams, throwing new light on the contributions that Black artists have made to the music industry. The February 1 edition of the podcast highlights Aaliyah, and the February 2 show is on Memphis Minnie.

Womanica’s daily offering of stories, human moments, and historical breakthroughs can be found on Apple, Spotify, and all other podcast outlets. “I could not be more honored and thrilled to guest host this month’s Womanica podcast,” says the singer-songwriter.

“I’ve always admired the show’s ability to amplify the vibrant, untold stories of notable women throughout history. I’m especially galvanized and eager to highlight these brilliant Black Women – iconic, trailblazing musicians all. These timeless artists have had such a profound influence on my career and art, and a foundational, formative influence on the music industry, and society as we know it.”

Russell’s 2021 solo debut album, Outside Child, has been nominated for three Grammy Awards and was prominent on countless year-end lists by music critics. Last week, she was named International Artist of the Year and Outside Child was chosen as International Album of the Year at the UK Americana Awards 2022.

The album is shortlisted for Best Americana Album at the 2022 Grammy Awards, with “Nightflyer” as both Best American Roots Song and Best American Roots Performance. She begins a US tour on February 24, with dates including an appearance at MerleFest in Wilkesboro, North Carolina on April 30.
