Jack Johnson is reissuing two of his soundtracks on vinyl, more than 20 years after they first came out. The soundtracks are for his documentaries, *Thicker Than Water* and *The September Sessions*, both of which he directed and focus on surfing. Pre-orders will start on Monday, September 29.
Before becoming a well-known singer with hits like “Banana Pancakes,” Johnson grew up in Hawaii with a love for surfing and film. In 1999, he directed *Thicker Than Water*, showcasing professional surfers in stunning locations like Hawaii, Ireland, Australia, India, and Indonesia. His second film, *The September Sessions*, highlights surfers in Sumatra.
For the soundtracks, Johnson recorded the music himself. He played guitar along with the surfing scenes, using a four-track cassette in his bedroom. He initially planned to record everything in a studio later, but ended up using the original four-track recordings. The first soundtrack, *Thicker Than Water*, is all instrumental, while the second includes some vocals.
Johnson also collaborated with other musicians for the soundtracks, featuring artists like G. Love & Special Sauce, The Meters, Smoke City, and Finley Quay. The soundtrack for *The September Sessions* includes Johnson’s cover of “Pirate Looks At 40” by Jimmy Buffett.
