Watch Halsey’s Strobing Performance Video For ‘You Asked For This’

Halsey has shared a performance video for “You Asked For This,” one of the songs that featured on their acclaimed fourth album If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power.

Directed by Dani Vitale, the video sees the New Jersey-born singer delivering an impassioned live version of the track in a Los Angeles studio full of strobing red lights.

The video shows just Halsey singing her lines to the camera, with the lens’ movements becoming unpredictable and erratic each time the chorus hits. Watch it below.

In response to a fan’s question on Twitter last month, the musician explained that the song “is a conversation between the me who is becoming a mom saying ‘grow up’ and the part that so desperately wants to remain a child. Wondering if we can co-exist, despite the massive change.’” If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power detailed Halsey’s experiences during her first pregnancy, including traversing concerns around identity and body image as she prepared to enter a new phase of her life.

The album was created in collaboration with Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross and has been on the receiving end of great acclaim, featuring on Albums Of The Year 2021 lists from the likes of NME and Rolling Stone, while it has also been nominated for Best Alternative Music Album at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards, which will take place on January 31, 2022.

The record was released in conjunction with a film of the same name. A trailer for the movie explained it was about “the lifelong social labyrinth of sexuality and birth.”

Meanwhile, Halsey has been confirmed as one of the headliners of Reading & Leeds Festivals 2022. They will top the bill at the UK twin festivals for the first time in August. Before that, they will collect the Innovation Award at the BandLab NME Awards 2022 at London’s O2 Academy Brixton on March 2.
