Kacey Musgraves’ much-anticipated new single “justified” has made its debut, alongside a video for the track directed by Bardia Zeinali.

As reported, the song is taken from her forthcoming fourth studio album star-crossed, to be released by Interscope/MCA Nashville. The video made its broadcast premiere on MTV Live, MTVU, CMT, CMT Music, and on the ViacomCBS Times Square billboard. It’s from star-crossed : the film, a visual companion to the album, also released on September 10.

The clip is an elegant chronicle of the process of quiet self-reflection and of the setbacks of rebuilding, as the artists learns that “healing doesn’t happen in a straight line.” On social media, Musgraves describes the song as “a small part of the journey ahead.”

The “justified” single and video follow her release earlier this week of the title track of the impending album. NPR Music wrote in a post: “How do you follow up the domestic bliss of Golden Hour when real life doesn’t go according to the narrative? @KaceyMusgraves’ star-crossed offers an answer.”

Musgraves will debut the song in her first-ever MTV VMAs performance on September 12. The 50-minute film begins streaming on September 10 exclusively on Paramount+. star-crossed : the film is directed by Musgraves’ friend Bardia Zeinali, whom she met on the set of a Vogue photo shoot in 2019. He later directed her in the video for “Easy,” her collaboration with Troye Sivan released in 2020.

The September 10 global premiere of the film will stream exclusively on Paramount+ in the US, Latin America, Australia, the Nordics, and Canada. Outside of these markets, the star’s fans will be able to watch it on MTV across its worldwide network of channels in close to 180 regions. star-crossed : the film is presented by Interscope Films and is an Anonymous Content Production in association with UMG Nashville, Sandbox Entertainment and Golden Girl Productions.
