Weezer’s ‘Island In The Sun’ Achieves Milestone by Joining Spotify’s Billion Streams Club

Weezer’s hit song “Island In The Sun” has officially joined the billion streams club on Spotify. This track, from the band’s 2001 self-titled album (often called The Green Album), is now one of just over a thousand songs on the platform to reach this milestone. It’s also Weezer’s first song to hit one billion streams.

Released as the second single from The Green Album, “Island In The Sun” followed the song “Hash Pipe.” While it didn’t make a big splash on the Billboard Hot 100 when it first came out, the song has grown to become one of Weezer’s most recognized tracks. It has been featured in popular shows like The Simpsons, The Sopranos, and 9-1-1, as well as movies like Trolls Band Together and Aquamarine.

After the darker themes of their 1996 album Pinkerton, frontman Rivers Cuomo aimed for a lighter sound with The Green Album. In a 2001 interview, he mentioned wanting to create music similar to early Beatles and Beach Boys songs—catchy and enjoyable without deep personal themes. Drummer Pat Wilson echoed this sentiment, noting that the songs from that era are straightforward and accessible.

“Island In The Sun” also has two music videos. The first features the band at a Mexican wedding, while the second, directed by Spike Jonze, showcases the band playing with various animals. The song has gained even more popularity on TikTok, where it has been used in nearly 340,000 videos.
