3 Doors Down have announced a vinyl reissue of Away From the Sun. The band’s 2002 sophomore album will arrive on 1LP standard weight black vinyl later this year.
Away From the Sun was the Mississippi rock group’s first album to arrive to an established audience. The record features “Here Without You,” which reached No. 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and was certified 6x platinum in the US. The lead single, “When I’m Gone,” peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent seventeen weeks on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, becoming one of the longest-running number-one singles.
“Away from the Sun was our first record we wrote as a band… ‘a professional band,’” vocalist Brad Arnold said recently. “The first record, I didn’t really have a place that I could put my finger on where I wrote all those songs together.”
In 2023, 3 Doors Down celebrated the 20th anniversary of Away From the Sun by playing the album in its entirety. At the time, Arnold said that “Away From the Sun has always been a personal favorite of mine because of how much it resonated with our country’s service members.” On October 2, 2002, the band performed live aboard the U.S.S. George Washington in the Mediterranean Sea. One of “When I’m Gone”’s official music videos captures the performance and is intercut with footage of military members and their families.
Away From the Sun followed 3 Doors Down’s 2000 debut The Better Life, which featured three hit singles, including the No. 3 breakthrough debut single “Kryptonite.” It’s also the band’s only record to feature Arnold on drums. Last year, “Kryptonite” joined the Spotify Billions Club.
