August is a big month for sports, featuring Major League Baseball, the U.S. Open Tennis Championship, World Wrestling Entertainment, NASCAR races, track and field, and the kickoff of college football. August 13 has seen some unforgettable sports moments over the years. Here are a few highlights:

In 1906, Jack Taylor’s incredible streak of pitching in consecutive MLB games came to an end. He set a record with 202 games, including 187 complete games. Two years later, an exhibition game in Boston celebrated Hall of Famer Cy Young.

Fast forward to 1917, when the Philadelphia Phillies stole five bases in a single inning. In 1920, Ted Ray clinched the U.S. Open men’s golf title by just one stroke. Red Ruffing made history in 1932 as the first pitcher since 1906 to hit a game-winning home run in extra innings.

The New York Yankees made headlines in 1939 by beating the Philadelphia A’s 21-0, setting an American League record for the largest victory margin. In 1948, boxer László Papp won his first Olympic gold medal, starting a streak of three in a row.

Fast forward to 2008, when Michael Phelps won three gold medals in one day, each in world record time. He capped off his career at the 2016 Rio Olympics, winning his 23rd gold medal in the 4×100-meter medley relay.
