April is an exciting month for sports fans, featuring NBA and NHL playoffs, the start of MLB, The Masters, the NCAA Basketball title game, the NFL Draft, and various Grand Prix events. Over the years, April 3 has seen many memorable moments in sports history.

In 1908, Frank Gotch became the World Heavyweight Wrestling Champion by defeating George Hackenschmidt in a grueling two-hour match. Fast forward to 1930, the Montreal Canadiens clinched their third championship by beating the Boston Bruins 4-3. In 1935, Yasuo Ikenada set a world record marathon time of 2:26:44 in Tokyo.

The Baltimore Orioles made history in 1955 with their first triple play. In 1961, the Boston Celtics achieved their 60th win of the season, setting an NBA record. American jockey Eddie Arcaro retired in 1962 after an impressive 31-year career. The American League introduced the designated hitter rule in 1973, and in 1976, the Philadelphia Flyers tied a record with their 20th straight home win.

April 3 has also seen significant achievements in other sports. In 1982, Marco van Basten scored his first goal for Ajax, while Gil Perrault reached his 1,000th NHL point. The NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship in 1983 saw USC narrowly defeat Louisiana Tech.

In 1989, Michigan won their first title against Seton Hall, with Glen Rice named Most Outstanding Player. The Masters was won by Jose Maria Olazabal in 1994, and in 2006, Florida claimed their first title against UCLA.
