This Day in Top 40 History: April 9  

April 9 is a significant date in Top 40 music history, filled with memorable moments. Pop stars captivated fans, awards were handed out, and exciting announcements were made, including a TV game show appearance and a fresh pop twist on classic country hits.

In 1966, The Righteous Brothers topped the US Billboard Hot 100 with their hit, which also reached No. 15 in the UK. Eleven years later, ABBA scored their only US No. 1 with a song that dominated charts in Canada, the UK, and Sweden. In 1988, Billy Ocean’s track hit No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks and also topped the Hot Black Singles chart. Fast forward to 2000, Moby’s album Play reached No. 1 in the UK, staying there for five weeks and earning Platinum status in over 20 countries.

April 9 also marks key cultural moments. In 1962, Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer won an Oscar for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards for a song from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. In 1972, influential producer RedOne was born, later helping launch the careers of stars like Lady Gaga and Usher. Lil Nas X, born in 1999, has already achieved three No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100.

Notable performances took place on this date as well. In 2009, Lady Gaga wowed fans in Atlanta during her Fame Ball Tour. In 2015, Meghan Trainor lit up the O2 Ritz in Manchester with a vibrant show. Most recently, in 2021, Taylor Swift released Fearless (Taylor’s Version), reimagining her earlier hits with a fresh sound.
