Generations of ice cream lovers have enjoyed Bassetts Ice Cream, America’s oldest ice cream brand with roots in Philadelphia. Since 1893, Bassetts has been a staple at Reading Terminal Market. No matter the weather, visitors line up for their favorite scoops of this classic treat.
Alex Bassett Strange, a sixth-generation family member, shared, “It’s my great-grandfather’s recipe, and we haven’t changed anything.” Bassetts uses a rich, high butterfat recipe with 16.4% milk fat, sticking to the traditional Philadelphia style without chasing trends. Each generation takes pride in preserving the brand and its recipe.
Bassetts has been in the same spot at Reading Terminal Market since it opened. The company’s history dates back to the Civil War era. “In 1861, my great-great-great-grandfather started our company,” Bassett Strange explained. He made ice cream on his farm in Salem, New Jersey, and sold it in farmers markets along Market Street in Philadelphia.
While the classic Philadelphia-style vanilla remains a favorite, Bassetts also offers flavors like banana, butterscotch, butter pecan, and chocolate. This summer, in honor of America’s 250th anniversary, Bassetts will introduce a special red, white, and blueberry flavor. Whether you’re a long-time fan or trying it for the first time, Bassetts Ice Cream is a delicious piece of American history.
