This Day in Rock History: May 11

Rock music has seen its fair share of highs and lows, and May 11 has been a significant date in its history. With chart-topping hits, memorable concerts, and influential records, this day has shaped the genre we love. Here are some highlights from May 11 in rock history.

1957: The Everly Brothers made their live debut at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. Their performance was a hit, leading to regular appearances there.

1963: The Beatles released their debut album, Please Please Me, which soared to No. 1 on the U.K. album charts, staying there for an impressive 30 weeks.

1970: The triple album Woodstock: Music from the Original Soundtrack and More was released, featuring live performances from the legendary festival. It was later re-released and certified Multi-Platinum in the U.S.

1985: Madonna’s “Crazy for You” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, surpassing USA for Africa’s “We Are the World.” This marked her second No. 1 single in the U.S.

Cultural milestones also stand out from this date. 1941 saw the birth of Eric Burdon, frontman of the Animals, a key figure in the British invasion. 1947 marked the birth of Butch Trucks, drummer for the Allman Brothers Band, who was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1995. In 1990, rock pioneer Ritchie Valens received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame posthumously.

Notable recordings include 1981, when Frank Zappa released four albums in one day. In 1995, a tribute concert for Stevie Ray Vaughan featured legends like Eric Clapton and B.B. King in Austin, Texas. These moments remind us of the rich history of rock music on May 11.
