This Day in Sports History: June 30

June 30 has given music fans moments as packed as a festival day. Think of big shows, surprise returns, and chart-topping hits — but in sports form. Here are standout moments that read like a tour history.

In 1897, R.F. Doherty claimed the first of four Wimbledon titles. Dorothea Chambers did the same in 1903. In 1908, Cy Young tossed his third no-hitter while Charlotte Cooper Sterry grabbed her fifth Wimbledon crown. Jack Johnson kept his boxing title in a 1909 no-decision. Anthony Wilding began a streak of four straight Wimbledon wins in 1910.

Golf and baseball had their own headline acts. Harry Vardon won his fifth British Open in 1911. Chick Evans set a U.S. Open scoring mark in 1916. Bobby Jones scored his third U.S. Open in 1929. Bob Lemon threw a no-hitter in 1948, and Sandy Koufax did it again in 1962. Willie McCovey joined the 500-homer club in 1978.

Big moments kept coming: Pete Rozelle awarded Atlanta an NFL team in 1965. Muhammad Ali defended his title in 1975. Cliff Johnson hit three straight homers in 1977. Miller Barber and Don Pooley won senior majors. Meg Mallon and Inbee Park took big LPGA titles.

Draft night drama showed up too. In 1993, Chris Webber and Penny Hardaway were swapped in a draft-day trade. Elton Brand went first overall in 1999. Eddie Murray reached 3,000 hits in 1995.

World cups and finals added the stadium lights. Germany beat the Czech Republic in Euro 1996. Brazil beat Germany in the 2002 World Cup final with two goals by Ronaldo. France edged Argentina 4-3 in 2018, with Kylian Mbappé stealing the show.

These dates read like a festival lineup — legends, surprises, and records that still get fans talking.
