Thousands of leftover meals from FIFA World Cup events are feeding people in Philly. Local groups teamed up to rescue and redistribute boxed lunches and snacks from the games. They saved nearly 20,000 pounds of food meant for staff, players, and coaches.
The Everywhere Project worked with the Garden of Health food pantry to store and hand out the meals. The pantry helps get the food to families who need it. They also let the Everywhere Project come in and distribute directly.
This effort has helped more than 1,000 people in Kensington, Center City, and Ambler. It’s giving fresh options like veggies and salads, not just packaged snacks. That matters for folks facing money problems or cuts to food benefits.
For music fans used to seeing big tour crews and stadium catering, this shows how large events can do good after the show. Surplus food doesn’t have to go to waste. Instead, it’s feeding communities across the region.
