On any given weeknight in Philadelphia, adults come together on basketball courts, in gyms, and on soccer fields. More adults are joining recreational sports leagues to make friends, break their routines, and stay motivated through activities like basketball, soccer, and hockey, in a city dominated by work and screens.
Recreational sports are among the fastest-growing forms of exercise among adults. Citing a 2025 CivicScience survey, Axios stated that 20% of U.S. adults said they participated in team sports, double the 11% who said the same in 2020.
Heyday Athletics, which runs leagues, pickup games, and tournaments across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware, says it has also seen healthy growth in adult participation.
“I think rec leagues have become a much bigger part of how people stay active, meet new people, and add something fun to their week,” said Brian Wagner, the organization’s chief administrative officer, in a statement shared with WHYY. “At Heyday, we’ve seen participation grow each year, including new faces joining our league.”
According to WHYY, the organization serves about 60,000 participants.
Personal stories of involvement illustrate the social payoff: Madeline Fuchs, who plays in a recreational basketball league, has built friendships through the Old Pine Community Center.Â
Alex Ozl values the mix of exercise, social interaction, and enjoyment from participating in weekly soccer matches. “This is a really good opportunity for me to hang out with my friends and get a little bit of exercise at the same time,” he shared with WHYY. “I really like the fact that I can add a little bit of joy into my week.”
Leiar Robinson has taken a liking to floor hockey and plays games at Old Pine Community Center.
“It’s just fun to move your body and meet new people that otherwise you wouldn’t really run into on a day-to-day basis,” she told WHYY.
Regardless of the sport, these adult rec leagues provide a regular, socially rewarding reason to participate and build community.
