Everclear is on the road with American Hi-Fi for the Lucky 7 Tour. Before each show, fans pick seven songs from a list of 21 deep cuts. The band played Salt Lake City, Utah, on Tuesday, and they’re hitting Cheyenne, Wyo., tonight.
Voting opens before each stop, and the band still plays its biggest songs. “I don’t like it when bands don’t play their hits,” Everclear frontperson Art Alexakis told Cap Times.
The set changes every night. Hand-made video clips announce each song.
Younger fans pack the crowds, too. “Oh, you can’t not notice it. I’d say literally about 40% of the people coming to these shows are Gen Z,” he said.
Everclear started in 1992. Alexakis sings, writes the songs, and plays guitar. He figures the band has played Madison, Wis., “20 or 30 times.” Part of the 1995 album Sparkle and Fade was recorded at Smart Studios in that city.
A new Everclear album is also in progress. About nine songs are done, and six or seven more are taking shape.
“It’s going to be aggressive. It’s going to be political,” he said, as quoted by AOL. The band plans to record the next batch of songs after the tour, before Christmas, and finish the album next year.
Alexakis said the album is musically “very connected to our early records,” World of Noise and Sparkle and Fade. He isn’t in a big rush to put it out.
He is also writing a memoir. Doctors diagnosed him with multiple sclerosis in 2016, and he has lived with it since.
