David Lee Roth: Is He Second-Guessing Retirement or Just Being Dave?

David Lee Roth announced he’s retiring following his upcoming Las Vegas residency at the House of Blues at Mandalay Bay, but could he already be second-guessing that decision? (Or is he just being Dave? It’s so hard to tell.)

Roth shared the poster for his residency to his social media channels, and the residency is called “The Last Tour Unless It Isn’t.” The poster also contains the phrases “I come to work — Audience comes to play” and “Live for the Music — Party for the People!”

Who’s to say what all of this means, especially when Diamond Dave announced his retirement so suddenly in an interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal that was published on October 1.

Roth said, in part, “I am throwing in the shoes. I’m retiring…I’m not going to explain the statement. The explanation is in a safe. These are my last five shows…I’ve given you all I’ve got to give. It’s been an amazing, great run, no regrets, nothing to say about anybody. I’ll miss you all. Stay frosty.”

DLR’s final shows are set for New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, Jan. 5 and Jan. 7-8 at the House of Blues at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Tickets for those shows are on sale now via Ticketmaster.com.

As for why he’s (potentially) calling it a day now, Roth alluded to the death of bandmate Eddie Van Halen saying, “I am encouraged and compelled to really come to grips with how short time is, and my time is probably even shorter…I thought I might have been the first, frankly … ‘Hey Ed, objects in the rear-view mirror are probably me.’ And my doctors, my handlers, compelled me to really address that every time I go onstage, I endanger that future.”
