Rob McElhenney made his homecoming count. The Always Sunny Podcast visited the Mann Music Center in Fairmount Park for a live performance on Saturday night.
The festivities included an unexpected appearance from Kaitlin Olsen and a recap of “Mac Day,” filmed just a stone’s throw away at the Strawberry Mansion Bridge.
However, Rob McElhenney shared the best nugget of the night by admitting his favorite episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
The Nightman Cometh
There are plenty of greats that the show’s creator and co-star had to choose from.
“The D.E.N.N.I.S. System” was possibly the most creative (and alarming) episode. “The World Series Defense” recounted the gang’s hilarious story about the 2008 Philadelphia Phillies. “The Gang Beats Boggs” announced Season 10 with a bang.
However, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer, McElhenney made his choice based on one moment when he realized just how big the show had become.
“The Nightman Cometh” was the 13th episode of Season 4. In the episode, Charlie writes a musical with some awesome parts to hand out to all his friends. However, he foolishly underestimates the narcissism of those friends. Fans of the show could’ve easily predicted the gang’s performance wouldn’t go smoothly.
The main cast later performed songs from “The Nightman Cometh” in Los Angeles in front of a live crowd.
“I remember coming out on the stage, and [the crowd knew] not just the songs but the lines of the episode. It was like The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It felt like we actually had a hit show.” -Rob McElhenney
He certainly made a worthy choice. “The Nightman Cometh” included Dee using the musical as a chance to solicit men from the audience and Mac taking the opportunity on stage to prove himself as a true badass.
Frank’s lack of understanding about his character, the troll, even led to a memorable/cringeworthy mix-up. Charlie’s proposal to the Waitress on stage capped off the chaos perfectly.
Glenn Howerton on 93.3 WMMR
The Preston & Steve Show hosted Glenn Howerton (Dennis Reynolds) in studio to preview the live podcast, shed some light on working with Danny DeVito, and promote the new Four Falls Whiskey.
When It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia comes to town, it’s always a party.
