This May, Eastern State Penitentiary is inviting everyone to reflect and engage with its “A Time for Liberty” initiative. The lineup of events for May 2026 includes discussions, hands-on activities, and immersive tours that highlight the impact of incarceration on society today.
A key part of the month is the Justice 101 series, which features important public conversations. One highlight is the event Philly Saves: Adaptive Reuse of Sites of Memory and Trauma on May 21. This discussion will explore how significant places, like prisons and churches, can be transformed into spaces for healing and community. Another important talk, Faith, Reentry, and Prison Reform on May 27, looks at how faith communities help with rehabilitation and reintegration, reflecting on justice 250 years after the nation’s founding.
Additional Justice 101 programs include a virtual session on May 13 about the origins of solitary confinement and the May 20 discussion Dying on the Inside, which focuses on aging and long-term incarceration for women. These events connect past practices to current conversations about reform and policy.
Visitors can also enjoy the Memorial Day Weekend Preservation Fest on May 23–24. This event offers exclusive access to preservation efforts and hidden areas of the historic site. Guests can take part in activities like masonry demonstrations, a LEGO design challenge, and interactive exhibits showcasing artifacts from the past.
May also kicks off the Finding Freedom Civic Season, running through September 7. This extended programming invites visitors to explore the history of one of America’s most influential prisons and its ties to modern social issues.
