Stone Temple Pilots singer Jeff Gutt says the band will write new music when it happens on its own, not on a set schedule. He spoke up when someone asked if the group has plans to release new songs.
“It has to happen organically where it’s something that we’re doing in the moment,” Gutt said in an interview with The Rock Pit. He added, “Especially with STP, it’s gotta be very organic and real.”
The band members are busy with other projects. Dean DeLeo, the group’s guitarist, has put out a few records on his own. Bassist Robert DeLeo has put out one, Gutt believes, and maybe two.
“It’s crazy, because Dean’s [DeLeo, STP guitarist] put out a few records on his own, and Robert’s [DeLeo, STP bassist] put out one, I believe. Maybe two. One, I think. Maybe two; I’m not sure. And I’m actually working on finishing what I was doing, ’cause when I joined STP, I was working on a record and I had to stop. So I’m actually working on finishing that right now. And at some point here we’re gonna come together and write some new music together,” Gutt said in the interview.
Once everyone wraps up their own work, the band will turn to new songs. “It’ll probably happen quickly too, because that’s how those things tend to go,” he added.
Stone Temple Pilots has three original members: Robert DeLeo, Dean DeLeo, and drummer Eric Kretz. Almost seven years have passed since the band last put out new music.
Gutt is 50 and a native of Michigan. He played in the early-2000s nu-metal band Dry Cell, along with other groups, and he competed on The X Factor. His path to Stone Temple Pilots was long. He beat out about 15,000 hopefuls in a search that began more than a year earlier.
His first album recording with the group was the self-titled seventh album, Stone Temple Pilots, released in March 2018. In February 2020, the band put out its first all-acoustic album, Perdida. It was the second album Gutt made with the group.
Scott Weiland, the original singer, rejoined the band in 2008. The band fired him in 2013. He died in December 2015 of a drug overdose.
Chester Bennington joined in early 2013. He left almost three years later so he could spend more time with his main band, Linkin Park. Bennington died by suicide in July 2017.
