Lorde is back. The New Zealand pop superstar has officially announced the release date of her highly anticipated new album, Virgin, arriving on June 27.
The announcement of Virgin follows last week’s release of Lorde’s comeback single “What Was That,” co-produced by the singer, Jim-E Stack and Dan Nigro. The tune hit No. 1 on Spotify in the US, Lorde’s first top single on the streaming platform since her 2013 debut single, “Royals.” The accompanying music video was filmed in New York City, showcasing the singer meeting up with fans in Washington Square Park.
“THE COLOUR OF THE ALBUM IS CLEAR,” Lorde said of the album in an all-caps statement. “LIKE BATHWATER, WINDOWS, ICE, SPIT. FULL TRANSPARENCY. THE LANGUAGE IS PLAIN AND UNSENTIMENTAL. THE SOUNDS ARE THE SAME WHEREVER POSSIBLE. I WAS TRYING TO SEE MYSELF, ALL THE WAY THROUGH. I WAS TRYING TO MAKE A DOCUMENT THAT REFLECTED MY FEMININITY: RAW, PRIMAL, INNOCENT, ELEGANT, OPENHEARTED, SPIRITUAL, MASC.”
She continued: “I’M PROUD AND SCARED OF THIS ALBUM. THERE’S NOWHERE TO HIDE. I BELIEVE THAT PUTTING THE DEEPEST PARTS OF OURSELVES TO MUSIC IS WHAT SETS US FREE.”
The album’s collaborators include Jim-E Stack, Fabiana Palladino, Andrew Aged, Buddy Ross, Dan Nigro, and Dev Hynes of Blood Orange. The artwork features a blue X-ray of a pelvis with a zipper and an IUD visible.
Virgin marks Lorde’s first album since 2021’s Solar Power, which hit No. 5 on the Billboard 200 and features singles like “Solar Power,” “Stoned at the Nail Salon,” “Mood Ring,” and “Fallen Fruit.” Recently, the singer’s “Ribs” single from 2013’s Pure Heroine became a trending song on TikTok.
