Pearl Jam took a moment during the first show of their rescheduled tour in support of their latest album Gigaton to pay tribute to Taylor Hawkins.
Before launching into “Quick Escape,” Eddie Vedder addressed the crowd inside San Diego’s Viejas Arena and drummer Matt Cameron, who was a good friend of Hawkins’ saying, “[Hawkins] emitted something very incredible and very special. We’re all missing him, and so, Matt, I’m sorry again for your loss. But it just gives us another chance to say how much we appreciate you as well.”
Pearl Jam’s tribute comes just days after Sammy Hagar and the Red Hot Chili Peppers honored the late Foo Fighters drummer, who died suddenly on March 25 at the age of 50. Both acts filled in for the Foo Fighters who were scheduled to headline the Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis on April 29 and the New Orleans Jazz Fest on May 1, respectively.
