Sean Ono Lennon To Release Meditation Mixes Of John Lennon’s ‘Mind Games’

Sean Ono Lennon’s meditation mixes of his father John Lennon’s 1973 hit “Mind Games,” which first appeared on the consciousness-expanding photo app Lumenate, will be released this fall digitally and in a 3xLP vinyl set. Mind Games – The Meditation Mixes is coming on October 4, just days before Sean and John’s shared birthday of October 9. The 3xLP version will be pressed on 180-gram crystal clear vinyl and be packaged in a triple gatefold mirror board sleeve.

“Mind Games,” the opener and title track from John’s 1973 album, was a top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. The album was recently revisited through the expanded reissue Mind Games – The Ultimate Collection. Now comes The Meditation Mixes, nine reworkings of the song created by Sean to help listeners relax and guide them into deeper states of consciousness.

The nine mixes present slowed down and extended takes on “Mind Games” ranging from five to over 23 minutes. Each track radically transforms the original song through sound design techniques, sometimes with added instrumentation by Sean. On Lumenate, where they were first released in May in conjunction with Mental Health Awareness Month, the mixes were paired with immersive light sequences.

“You might say meditation is the ultimate mind game,” Sean says. “These very abstract interpretations will hopefully assist you in exploring your ‘Innerverse.’ I was both thrilled and surprised when UMG said they wanted to make a vinyl edition. This part of the Mind Games project evolved spontaneously and feels like it is sprinkled with just the right amount of good vibes and fairy dust. (Effects may vary).”

Four of the tracks — “Mind,” “Space,” “Spirit,” and “Love” — are presented in a Binaural format, each of which is focused on a different type of brain waves: Beta, Delta, Gamma, and Theta. The music creates an auditory illusion within the brain when the left and right ears hear slightly different frequencies, which leads the listener to perceive a new frequency, activating different brain patterns with scientifically proven therapeutic effects.
