This Day in Rock History: August 3

August 3rd has seen many important moments in music history, especially in rock. From U2’s rise in the late ’80s to Pearl Jam’s success in the late ’90s, rock has made its mark.

In 1987, U2 reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 with “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.” After spending nine weeks on the chart, it finally climbed to No. 1, moving up from No. 2 the previous week.

Fast forward to 1999, Pearl Jam held onto a Top 10 spot with “Last Kiss,” which was at No. 6. This was impressive during a time dominated by pop and R&B, and the song had already spent 11 weeks on the chart.

August 3rd also marks personal milestones for rock legends. James Hetfield, the lead vocalist and co-founder of Metallica, was born in 1963 in Downey, California. In 2010, Dave Mustaine of Megadeth released his autobiography, “Mustaine: A Heavy Metal Memoir,” which became a bestseller on Amazon.

Live performances have kept rock alive, even when some albums missed the mark. In 1992, The Beach Boys released “Summer in Paradise,” their 27th studio album, but it didn’t do well. In 2000, Pearl Jam kicked off a show at the GTE Virginia Beach Amphitheater, playing hits like “Long Road” and “Yellow Ledbetter.”

Sadly, August 3rd also remembers the loss of artists. In 2003, Roger Voudouris passed away after battling liver disease. Arthur Lee, the singer of Love, died in 2006 after a long fight with leukemia.

August 3rd is a day filled with hits, milestones, live shows, and farewells in rock history.
