This Day in Sports History: April 4

April is an exciting month for sports fans. It features NBA and NHL playoffs, the start of the MLB season, The Masters, the NCAA Basketball title game, the NFL Draft, and various Grand Prix events. Over the years, April 4 has seen many memorable moments in sports history. Here are some highlights.

In 1911, automaker Hugh Chalmers introduced the concept of the “Most Valuable Player” in baseball. A decade later, in 1921, the Ottawa Senators clinched the Stanley Cup by defeating the Vancouver Millionaires 2-1. In 1937, Byron Nelson won his first major title at The Masters, finishing two strokes ahead of Ralph Guldahl. The following year, Henry Picard claimed his only Masters title.

In 1948, 84-year-old Connie Mack and 78-year-old Clark Griffith raced from home plate to first base, ending in a tie. In 1959, France won the Five Nations Rugby Championship by beating Wales 11-3. Hank Aaron tied Babe Ruth’s home run record in 1974 with his 714th home run.

In 1983, North Carolina State pulled off a stunning victory over Houston with a buzzer-beater by Lorenzo Charles. Wayne Gretzky set an NHL record with 213 points in 1986. The New York Mets made history in 1988 with six home runs on Opening Day.

In 1994, Arkansas won its first national title by defeating Duke. Tuffy Rhodes hit three home runs for the Cubs on Opening Day that same year. In 2005, North Carolina secured its fourth national championship by beating Illinois.

More recent highlights include Villanova’s win over North Carolina in 2016 and Kansas overcoming a 16-point deficit to win their fourth title in 2022. April 4 is truly a day filled with unforgettable sports moments.
