This Day in Sports History: March 31

March is an exciting month for sports fans. The NBA and NHL seasons are heating up, MLB teams are in Spring Training, and March Madness is in full swing. NASCAR and Formula 1 races are also on the calendar, along with UFC Fight Nights and some PGA Tour events. March 31 has seen many memorable moments in sports history. Here are a few highlights:

In 1877, Australian fast bowler Fred “The Demon” Spofforth made his Test cricket debut. Australia lost to England by four wickets at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Fast forward to 1973, when Boston Bruins defenseman Bobby Orr scored his third career hat trick in a 7-3 loss to Toronto, becoming the first player to hit 100 points in four straight NHL seasons.

In 1975, UCLA defeated Kentucky 92-85 to win its 10th NCAA championship under coach John Wooden, who announced his retirement just two days earlier. Larry Holmes knocked out Leroy Jones in 1980 to win the WBC heavyweight title, while Mike Weaver also claimed the WBA heavyweight belt that same day.

In 1984, Mike Bossy made history with seven straight 50-goal seasons. WrestleMania debuted in 1985 at Madison Square Garden, featuring Mr. T and Hulk Hogan. In 1986, Louisville won the NCAA championship against Duke, marking the first tournament with a shot clock.

In 1990, Joe Sakic became the youngest player to score 100 points in a season. Brett Hull scored his 86th goal in 1991, and in 1995, Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi made history as the top two players on the same Davis Cup team. March 31 has truly been a day of unforgettable sports moments!
