This Day in Rock History: October 21

On this day in rock history, we celebrate some memorable album releases and remember legendary drummer Keith Moon’s last show with The Who. Here are some key rock events that took place on October 21 over the years.

1972: Chuck Berry scored his only No. 1 hit with “My Ding-a-Ling,” which topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks. This live recording was made during a concert in Coventry, England.

1976: Keith Moon played his final official concert with The Who at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto.

2006: Evanescence reached the top of the Billboard 200 album chart with their album, The Open Door. This was a special moment for Billboard, marking the 700th album to hit the top spot since the chart began in 1967.

October 21 is also significant for some important album releases:

1970: Bob Dylan released his eleventh studio album, New Morning, just four months after his previous album, Self Portrait. New Morning topped the U.K. charts.

1977: Meatloaf released his debut album, Bat Out of Hell, through Cleveland International Records and Epic Records. It didn’t become an instant hit, but over time, it grew in popularity and is now one of the best-selling albums ever, with around 40 million copies sold.

From Chuck Berry’s chart-topping hit to Keith Moon’s farewell performance, October 21 has seen some unforgettable moments in rock music history.
