Tool Bassist Reveals Band’s Approach to New Material: Rejecting Deadlines

Tool bassist Justin Chancellor has confirmed that the band is working on new music, but they won’t rush the process. In a recent interview, he shared that the group believes art should not be forced. “We’re working on new music. I don’t know when we’re going to finish it. We’ve been working on stuff on and off for a couple of years,” Chancellor said.

Just last week, he and drummer Danny Carey were in the studio experimenting with new ideas. Chancellor emphasized that their approach to music sets them apart from other bands. “Art doesn’t really have a schedule. You can’t force it. If you do, it tends not to work out so great,” he explained. “It’s just the way it works with our band. It’s a different kind of alchemy.”

Tool released their fifth studio album, *Fear Inoculum*, in 2019, which came 13 years after their previous record. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and received gold certification by August 2020.

In addition to working on new music, each band member is involved in side projects. Vocalist Maynard James Keenan, Carey, guitarist Adam Jones, and Chancellor all pursue individual work that influences their collective sound. “We’ve learned to give each other space by staying busy with other things, which actually helps when we come back together,” Chancellor noted.

The band recently performed in Auckland and has more shows lined up. They will be at the Good Things Festival in Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane from December 4-6, followed by concerts in Japan on December 11 and 13. Fans can check out their complete tour schedule for more details.
