An exhibit honoring Ian Curtis, the late frontman of Joy Division, is set to open in New York City. Titled “Ian Curtis: Insight,” the exhibit will be held at the Voltz Clarke Gallery from June 25 to July 22. It will showcase Curtis’ handwritten lyrics, personal letters, photographs, and other items from the John Rylands Library at the University of Manchester.
Mat Bancroft, a curator at the library, stated, “Ian Curtis is a key figure in UK popular culture. He was a powerful lyricist and performer who helped define the post-punk era. This exhibit offers a chance to see his personal archive, including his lyrics, record and book collections, and fan letters.”
Curtis passed away in 1980 at the young age of 23. After his death, his bandmates went on to form New Order. Both Joy Division and New Order will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame together as part of the 2026 class, with the ceremony taking place on November 14 in Los Angeles.
