Swiss electronic pop pioneers Yello mark their 40th anniversary this year and to celebrate they are reissuing a series of highly sought after landmark albums on vinyl on 9 July. The titles are Baby, Zebra, Pocket Universe, Motion Picture and The Eye.
As a special surprise, both Motion Picture (2LP) and The Eye (2LP) will appear on vinyl for the first time. All these landmark Yello titles are pressed on 180g vinyl, with original artwork and an additional four-page booklet including liner notes, rare photos and limited to this one-time reissue edition.
Baby, the seventh Yello album, released in 1991, contains the classics “Rubberbandman” and “Jungle Bill” as well as the fan favourites “Capri Calling” and “Drive/Driven” and marks the musical bridge between the 80s and 90s for the dynamic duo Boris Blank/Dieter Meier duo.
Zebra, the eighth Yello album, first came out in 1994, containing the classic “Do It” as well as the fan favourites “How How” and “Tremendous Pain.” It was followed up by Pocket Universe, in 1997: certainly one of the most controversially discussed releases from the Swiss electronic legends, as the overall sound here was very progressive for the time. Yello’s tenth album, Motion Picture came in 1999 and includes fan favourites such as “Liquid Lies”, “Squeeze Please” and “Croissant Bleu”. In 2021 the album will now finally be released on vinyl for the very first time, as a 180g double LP in the original artwork with an additional four-page booklet including liner notes, rare photos and limited to a one-time reissue edition.
Finally, The Eye, Yello’s eleventh album, released in 2003, which features fan favourites such as “Planet Dada”, “Tiger Dust” and “Indigo Bay”. As with Motion Picture, the album will now finally be released on vinyl for the very first time, as a 180g double LP in the original artwork with an additional four-page booklet including liner notes, rare photos and limited to a one-time reissue edition.
Yello kicked off their 40th anniversary celebration earlier this year, with a comprehensive retrospective, Yell40 Years, issued through Polydor on April 30.
Yell40 Years isn’t a run of the mill best of with the typical songs like “The Race”, “Oh Yeah” or the ground-breaking “Bostich”, but more a place for all the pearls of their discography that have always stood for the Yello sound cosmos, but never really received the spotlight that they deserve. Songs like the everlasting fan favourite “I Love You”, the eccentric “Rubberbandman” or the Mellow Yello classic “Desire.”
