Evanescence has just released their new album, Sanctuary, and this year also marks the 20th anniversary of their album, The Open Door. Frontwoman Amy Lee reflects on how much has changed in the music industry regarding gender equality since 2006. She recalls that when the band started, she was often the only woman at festivals, except for her crew. While that was intimidating, it also felt powerful because they stood out and had something important to share.
Lee has noticed significant progress over the past two decades. “Now, when I go to festivals, there are always other women on stage,” she says, highlighting the improvements, especially in heavy music. However, she prefers to move beyond gender labels. “I don’t want to be the best female-fronted rock band; I want to be the best rock band, period,” she emphasizes. For her, talent should be what matters, regardless of gender or background. She proudly supports the women she brings on tour, stating, “They all rock.”
Evanescence’s world tour kicks off on June 11, featuring artists like Spiritbox, Nova Twins, Poppy, and K.Flay. Lee is excited that her collaborations with these artists, along with Halsey and Bring Me the Horizon, are helping younger fans discover Evanescence. “When we earn new fans at this stage, it really feels like the goal,” she shares.
