Ben Gibbard says opening for Twenty One Pilots felt like continuing a music tradition. The band was invited by Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun. “They’re big fans of our band,” Gibbard says. “They’re great dudes. They asked us to play, and we said, ‘Hell yeah.'”
Gibbard says it’s strange and rewarding to see younger bands who grew up on Death Cab’s music. He compares it to how his band learned from acts like The Cure and Fugazi. “We’re at a point where we’ve been around long enough to watch that happen,” he says.
He isn’t sure how the Twenty One Pilots crowd will react. “I don’t know how it’ll go over,” he laughs. But he adds that Joseph and Dun being happy matters most.
Death Cab for Cutie recently finished a U.S. tour supporting their new album, I Built You a Tower.
