Isaac Brock explores grief in Modest Mouse’s new album, *An Eraser and a Maze*. The album features songs that touch on themes of loss. One standout track, “Third Side of the Moon,” sees Brock reflecting on memories of a loved one, including the color of their eyes. He shares, “I think about what kind of message can I leave them that makes them feel OK about people passing on?” He aims to comfort those left behind rather than just mourn the loss.
Another song, “Dogbed in Heaven / Give It a Skeleton,” may resonate with anyone who has lost a pet. However, Brock clarifies that it’s not just about a dog; it’s about a character thinking of the people they loved as they face their own end.
Brock didn’t set out to write an album focused on death. He explains, “I kinda get out of my own way and let my subconscious do the writing.” He allowed the music to flow naturally without forcing a specific theme.
*An Eraser and a Maze* will be released this Friday. Modest Mouse will kick off a U.S. tour on Thursday in New Haven, Connecticut.
