This Day in Rock History: April 27

April 27 is a day filled with significant moments in rock history. It marks the American TV debut of Joe Cocker, the rise of USA For Africa’s iconic single to No. 1, and the reunion of Iggy Pop with The Stooges. Here’s a look at some key events from this day.

In 1957, Ricky Nelson released his first single, “A Teenager’s Romance.” It was a massive hit, selling over a million copies and reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Fast forward to 1969, when Joe Cocker made his American television debut on The Ed Sullivan Show, performing “Feelin’ Alright” with The Grease Band. This performance introduced him to a wider audience just months before his legendary Woodstock appearance.

In 1985, USA For Africa’s “We Are the World” topped the US Billboard Hot 100, staying there for three weeks. Written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, the song featured stars like Paul Simon, Tina Turner, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Smokey Robinson.

Today also celebrates two notable birthdays. Peter Ham, lead vocalist of Badfinger, was born in 1947. He wrote many of the band’s hits, including “Without You.” Ace Frehley, the original guitarist of KISS, was born in 1951. He played with the band from its start in 1973 until his final departure in 2002.

In 1966, The Beatles began recording “I’m Only Sleeping” at EMI Studio Three in London. Later, in 2003, Iggy Pop reunited with The Stooges at Coachella after 30 years, leading to a full tour and their 2007 album, The Weirdness.

These highlights show just how vibrant April 27 is in rock history. Check back tomorrow for more music news!
