June is an exciting month for sports fans, featuring the Stanley Cup Finals, NBA Finals, MLB season action, the NBA Draft, the U.S. Open, Wimbledon, the Belmont Stakes, and various Grand Prix events. Over the years, June 19 has seen many memorable moments in sports history.

In 1846, the first organized baseball game took place in Hoboken, New Jersey, where the New York Nine defeated the Knickerbockers 23-1. In 1867, Gilbert Gilpatrick won the inaugural Belmont Stakes on a horse named Ruthless, finishing in 3:05. The year 1897 marked the end of Wee Willie Keeler’s impressive 44-game hitting streak.

In tennis, Juliette Atkinson triumphed over defending champion Elisabeth Moore in the U.S. National Championship for Women. James Braid claimed his fourth British Open title in 1908, while Harry Vardon set a record with his sixth Open Championship win in 1914.

Paavo Nurmi set a world record in the 5000 meters in 1922. In 1936, Max Schmeling knocked out Joe Louis in a heavyweight championship fight. Helen Hicks won the LPGA Women’s Western Open in 1937, and in 1938, Johnny Vander Meer pitched 21 2/3 hitless innings.

The FIFA World Cup final in 1938 saw Italy defeat Hungary 4-1. Paul Waner reached 3,000 hits in 1942, and Carl Erskine pitched a no-hitter for the Dodgers in 1952. Mickey Mantle hit his 100th home run in 1955, while Roger Maris hit his 25th home run in 1961.

In 1999, the Dallas Stars won the Stanley Cup, and in 2000, the Los Angeles Lakers secured the NBA Championship. Michael Campbell won the U.S. Open in 2005, and Rory McIlroy set 11 records at the U.S. Open in 2011. Finally, in 2016, the Cleveland Cavaliers won their first NBA Championship.
