R.E.M.’s 1984 album Reckoning is getting a high‑definition vinyl reissue. The record will arrive Sept. 18 as part of the Interscope‑Capitol Definitive Sound Series on 180‑gram high‑definition vinyl. The audio was sourced from the original analog master tapes.
Co‑producers Mitch Easter and Don Dixon took part in the upgrade. Mastering engineer Chris Bellman handled the mastering. Dixon said that after hearing the test pressing he noticed details that had been missed on earlier vinyl editions.
The edition is limited to 5,000 numbered copies and is available for preorder now. This follows Definitive Sound reissues of R.E.M.’s Chronic Town EP and debut album Murmur, both reissued last December and now sold out.
Reckoning was released April 8, 1984. It reached No. 27 in the U.S. and topped college radio charts. Its singles included “So. Central Rain (I’m Sorry),” which hit No. 86 on the Billboard Hot 100, and “(Don’t Go Back to) Rockville.” The album is certified Gold by the RIAA.
