2 Local Drive-in Theaters Up for Voting in USA TODAY Readers’ Choice Awards Poll

Two local drive-in theaters are competing for the title of best drive-in in the country in a popular poll. Shankweiler’s Drive-In Theatre in Orefield, Pennsylvania, and Delsea Drive-In Theatre in Vineland, New Jersey, are both in the running. Fans can vote for their favorite drive-in once a day until voting ends on Monday, May 11, at noon. The top 10 winners will be revealed on Wednesday, May 20.

Shankweiler’s Drive-In is the oldest operating drive-in theater in the U.S., having opened in 1934. It runs year-round and features a snack bar with tasty options like veggie dogs, popcorn, cheeseburgers, funnel cakes, and ice cream.

Delsea Drive-In, built in 1949, is the only remaining drive-in theater in New Jersey. It operates seasonally, from mid-March to November, and shows double and triple features. The concession stand offers pizza, ice cream, and hamburgers, along with a gluten-free menu that includes chicken and wild rice soup, carrots with hummus, and gluten-free cookies.

The drive-in theater concept has local roots, with the first one opening in Camden, New Jersey, on June 6, 1933. So, if you love the drive-in experience, make sure to cast your vote and support these local gems!
