Slipknot might be the next big name in music catalog sales. The metal band is reportedly looking to sell the rights to their publishing and recording masters to HarbourView Equity Partners. This deal is said to be worth around $120 million and will include Slipknot’s current catalog, but not any future releases.
According to reports, Slipknot’s catalog has generated about $15.5 million in annual revenue over the past three years. Their publishing rights alone brought in $5.2 million each year during that same period.
The trend of massive music catalog sales really took off in the early 2020s, but these deals have slowed down recently. The last major catalog sale in the rock world happened in October 2024.
The Financial Times also mentioned that the deal includes the band name and the artists’ likeness. This means the new owners will have rights to merchandise and spin-offs like movies and TV shows. However, it’s important to note that this sale involves the recorded rights, not the songwriting rights, similar to a previous deal involving Pink Floyd.
The rumored sale of the Pink Floyd catalog first came to light in May 2022, but negotiations faced some challenges. At one point, at least one potential buyer backed out of the deal.
As Slipknot moves forward with this potential sale, fans will be watching closely to see how it unfolds. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development in the music world!
