Two legendary British rock bands are coming together as The Who’s cover of The Beatles’ “I Saw Her Standing There” is now available for streaming. This previously unreleased track features the late Keith Moon, The Who’s original drummer, on vocals. The band recorded it in the summer of 1977 at Shepperton Studios. Their lively version of the classic was a highlight in the 1979 rockumentary, The Kids Are Alright. The Who only performed the song again during their Shea Stadium shows in 1982, with John Entwistle taking over on vocals.
This cover is part of The Who’s upcoming Who Are You super deluxe reissue, set to release on October 31. This new edition includes over 70 unreleased tracks, including fresh versions of the title track “Who Are You,” live recordings from their first tour without Moon, and rehearsal recordings from 1977 and 1978. The 7CD/1 Blu-ray set features new Atmos and Stereo mixes by Steven Wilson. There will also be a deluxe 4LP box set, a 2CD deluxe edition, and limited-edition colored and half-speed master vinyl.
Originally released in August 1978, Who Are You was a significant moment for The Who. The album reached No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and No. 6 on the U.K. Albums Chart, achieving double platinum status. Sadly, it was the last album featuring Keith Moon, who passed away just a week after its release.
The Who continues to be a major force in music. They recently wrapped up their “The Song Is Over” farewell tour, which ran from August 16 to September 28, featuring special guests like Billy Idol and Joe Bonamassa. You can now shop for The Who’s Who Are You on vinyl or CD.
