This Day in Top 40 History: March 1

On March 1, 1994, Nirvana played their last concert in Munich, Germany. The show faced several issues, including a power outage and Kurt Cobain’s health struggles due to illness and substance abuse. Tragically, just a month later, the band lost their frontman to suicide.

March 1 has seen some significant music moments over the years. In 2005, Jack Johnson released his third album, *In Between Dreams*, featuring hits like “Better Together” and “Good People.” The album reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200. In 2019, Hozier dropped his second album, *Wasteland, Baby!*, which debuted at No. 1 and included popular singles like “Movement.”

Several Top 40 artists celebrate their birthdays on this date. Kesha was born in 1987 in Los Angeles. Growing up around music, she became a backup singer for stars like Britney Spears before launching her own successful career with hits like “Tik Tok.” Justin Bieber, born in 1994 in Stratford, Canada, started by covering songs online. His mother helped him share those videos, leading to a massive fanbase and eight No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including “Sorry.”

The music industry also faced challenges on March 1. In 1969, Jim Morrison of The Doors was arrested for indecent exposure during a performance in Miami. Fast forward to 2019, the Jonas Brothers made a comeback with “Sucker,” their first No. 1 hit after reuniting. In 2020, Public Enemy announced they had parted ways with Flavor Flav for missing multiple events.
