This Day in Top 40 History: April 16

Spring brought excitement to the music scene with the Coachella Music Festival on April 16. Each year features different headliners, and this time, Billie Eilish and Megan Thee Stallion took the stage. Pop icon Barbra Streisand made headlines by donating $5 million to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for women’s heart health. Meanwhile, Adele had to postpone her Las Vegas residency due to COVID-19.

Coachella has seen many memorable performances over the years. In 2002, Sheryl Crow released her album C’mon, C’mon, which debuted in the Top Five and sold over 180,000 copies in its first week. Major hits included songs that reached No. 5 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary Chart. Fast forward to 2013, Major Lazer released their album Free the Universe, collaborating with artists like Bruno Mars and Wyclef Jean, landing at No. 34 on both the U.K. and Billboard charts. In 2017, Kendrick Lamar, Lorde, and New Order headlined, while 2022 saw Billie Eilish and Megan Thee Stallion take the spotlight alongside Rich Brian and Caroline Polachek. This year, Bjork, Frank Ocean, and Porter Robinson headlined.

Cultural milestones also marked this day. Akon was born in 1973 and rose to fame with his debut album, Trouble, in 2004. Chance the Rapper, born in 1993, gained attention with his mixtape 10 Day while still in high school. In 2008, Barbra Streisand’s donation helped fund women’s cardiovascular research at Cedars-Sinai. In 2018, Kendrick Lamar made history by winning the Pulitzer Prize for Music for his album DAMN., becoming the first hip-hop artist to receive this honor.
