This Day in Top 40 History: May 5  

In the United States, May 5 is celebrated as Cinco de Mayo, and it’s also a day filled with memorable Top 40 music moments. This day marks Adele’s birthday, Taylor Swift’s performance in Nashville, and the stylish arrivals of pop stars at the Met Gala.

Several music milestones have occurred on this date. In 1997, Paul McCartney released his album “Flaming Pie” in the U.K., which reached No. 2 on the Official Album Chart and featured hits that made it to the Top 40. In 2008, Nine Inch Nails released “The Slip,” their seventh studio album, which peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard 200. Two years later, Lady Gaga performed on “American Idol,” showcasing her hit song while judge Harry Connick Jr. also took the stage. In 2017, Chris Stapleton released his second album, “From a Room: Volume 1,” which hit No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and topped the Top Country Albums chart. Taylor Swift performed at Nissan Stadium in Nashville in 2023, celebrating her roots in the city. That same year, Sabrina Carpenter held a concert in Toronto as part of her “Emails I Can’t Send” tour, earning GRAMMY nominations for her work.

May 5 is also a special day for birthdays. Craig David was born in 1981 and has since scored 26 U.K. Top 40 singles. In 1984, Jim Kerr of Simple Minds married Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders, though they divorced in 1990. Adele, the pop sensation, was born in 1988 and quickly rose to fame with multiple awards. Chris Brown was also born on this day in 1989, adding to the list of music legends.
